Abutilon theophrasti (velvetleaf)

Family: Malvaceae

Description

Look for the heart-shaped, velvety leaves, the yellow-orange flowers and the many sectioned fruit. This species was imported to the United States as a fiber crop but has escaped and become one of the major weed pests in the central states. In recent years it has become an increasing problem in the Pacific coast states. The distinctive dried pods are sometimes found in dried arrangements.
