Annual plants with opposite leaves. Most of the plant covered with long, somewhat appressed, soft hairs. The flowers are reddish-purple with the petals much shorter than the sepals. In Europe, what we call wheat, they call corn; hence the common name `corn cockle` refers to this plant`s prevalence in wheat fields. The term `cockle` is often used in common names for members of this family and refers to the calyx which enlarges at maturity forming a structure similar to a `cockle shell`.
