A native species which is often taller, more leafy and occurs in more moist sites, than most other species of the genus. The illustration in the 1967 book South Dakota Weeds is incorrect in that it shows the leaves as even pinnate when even according to its own text they always have an odd number of leaflets. This is one of the most taxonomically difficult genera in North America. Virtually all of our species are non-weedy native wildflowers which have been included in weed books due to toxicity from alkaloids or selenium accumulation.
