The mealy substance on the leaves of the mature plants and seedlings often lead the observer to believe they are seeing the genus Chenopodium. In fact, the mealy substance is just as typical of Atriplex. At maturity Atriplex can be distinguished from Chenopodium by the enlarged, angular bracts surrounding the seed. This species differs from typical Atriplex patula by having spearhead shaped leaves and the fruiting bracts often tuberculate on the back.
