Cardamine hirsuta (bittercress, hairy)

Family: Brassicaceae

Description

An annual blooming in the early spring. The leaves are mostly basal and have 3 - 9 rounded leaflets. A very common weed of shady, or moist areas such as flower beds. The young leaves have a spicy taste very similar to watercress. Commonly referred to as `shotweed` because the seed pods pop open (audibly) and shoot their seeds a considerable distance. Frequently mis-identified as the native C. oligosperma in many references including Flora of the pacific Northwest and several weed books. C. hirsuta commonly has only 4 stamens while C. oligosperma has 6 stamens.
