Equisetum arvense (horsetail, field)

Family: Equisetaceae

Description

In the spring the fruiting stalks of field horsetail emerge from its creeping rhizomes. They are slender and tubular, white to pink in color. Later in the season the vegetative stalks of the plants appear. These are often described as looking like small (< 1 foot tall) Christmas trees. These stems are very flexible and have several whorls of long, narrow branches. This stage of the plant contains chlorophyll and is green throughout.
