A native wildflower throughout dry regions of the western United States. The flowers range from lemon-yellow to deep orange and some varieties have been cultivated. The leaves are narrow and entire or few-toothed, with two-rayed hairs that parallel themselves and the leaf axis, closely appressed to the surface. Distinguished from E. asperum (another native species of overlapping distribution, considered by some former authors to be synonymous) by the following: E. asperum; fruits ascending to erect, flowers always yellow E. capitatum; fruits stiffly divergent, flowers sometimes orange
