Isatis tinctoria (woad, dyer's)

Family: Brassicaceae

Description

The word `weed` is derived from the word `woad` which is a tribute to the weedy nature of this species. The plant is used as a source of blue dye and can still be purchased in the seed trade despite being on the noxious weed list in several states. Note the distinctive dark brown, teardrop-shaped, pendulous seed pods.
