Phytolacca americana (pokeweed, common)

Family: Phytolaccaceae

Description

Large, herbaceous perennials, up to 10 feet tall. All parts of this plant are toxic, but the young shoots can be eaten after several boilings and changes of water; at which time they probably have no remaining nutritional value. The fruits are purple and berry-like with several lobes and occur in terminal racemes. Also called `poke salad.`
