The leaves are palmately dissected and the leaflets are serrate margined, which has caused great disappointment among some who have mistaken it for marijuana! This herbaceous perennial is one of the most aggressive weeds in the Western U.S., displacing spotted knapweed, yellow starthistle, and yellow hawkweed. It is often mistaken for Potentilla gracilis which is a native wildflower in which the bottoms of the leaves are much lighter colored than the tops.
