The fact that there are both native and alien members of this species has caused it to be a difficult plant to classify as a weed or a wildflower. This short, fibrous rooted perennial often occurs in lawns or pastures, and the terminal spike-like clusters of blue to purple irregular flowers are quite distinctive.
