A vining perennial, often found around old homesteads where it was planted as an ornamental. The berries produce seed which are spread by birds; hence the species is also found along steams and at the margins of woods. Children are very attracted to the shiny red, egg-shaped berries which are somewhat toxic. The leaves may be entire or are often lobed at the base.
